Topaz

I hope eventually to have a page for each major mineral group.
If clear white topaz is heated or irradiated, it can turn blue. Nearly all commercial blue topaz is so treated.

A Stone with a story!

I sent Gemco an order, and wanted some blue topaz. Good blue topaz. I told them to "Astonish me". The rough arrived on Valentine's day. For the real story, see how a Pro writes a better page about it than I did. Follow the link below:

See It SET! Finally.

Topaz barion

Pleochroism is a property of many topaz crystals. This Guererro Topaz shows "Bowties" of yellow and reddish orange in these photos.pleochroism
A natural crystal has a parralellopiped/lozenge shaped cross section:sketch of topaz crystalDetail:sketch of topaz crystal

Turn the crystal so the C axis makes the major dimension of a rectangular cushion. Face the table first, skewing it a few degrees away from the flat plane of the crystal..you will be grinding and polishing the A or the B axis. In addition to skewing it from the A plane, do it on the B as well, so you will be grinding one corner more than the opposite one. In this way, NO plane will be on a cleavage plane exactly. It sounds more complicated than it is. Dop to the finished table. Preform a cone at 43 o, until the proportions for pavilion/crown are where you want them. Now shape and facet the girdle outline. Take the extra five minutes to polish them. Cut and polish 16 pavilion mains. Now set the angle at 42.5 o and cut eight splits at every other main meet. Cut barion facets at 66o to establish a level girdle. Flip and do the crown, step 16 mains, 44/40/36 degrees.

Here are some others.. Trying to photograph the pleochroism is often exasperating.
